Today I walked around campus and I noticed there was a lot of garbage on the ground. The garbage can was right there and they did not take the time to throw it in the garbage. In the pictures I took we’re some of the litter I found.
People should not litter because it is illegal and it’s not good for environment. By littering it could hurt other people in the world and also animals. We go to school right by a lake that has fish. If the fish eat the garbage they could die.
I want people to throw away their garbage and recycle.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

A group of students went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at N.T.I.D. on April 28th. The actors signed the whole play and hearing actors interpreted. Students were each asked to write down three differences between Deaf and hearing plays. Here are some of their responses:

“They all were Deaf and they had an interpreter”
“It was different. Cause the people in the play was signing.”
“There were subtitles”
“Intermission” -The play started late and the intermission lasted twice as long as they stated it would. Deaf people like to chat and catch up.

Wilson Warm-up

Cochlear Implants

Students in the ASL class watched the documentary Sound and Fury. The documentary shows a two familes struggles deciding whether or not their Deaf child should recieve a cochlear implant. Students were taught about cochelear implants and posed the question “Should all deaf children get a coclear implant if that means the end of Deaf Culture?”

For cochlear implants: Cheyenne wrote “I think if some people are deaf I think they should get cochelear implants so they don’t have struggles + so they can talk + hear.”

Against cochlear implants: Erica wrote “No, Because It wouldn’t be cool if everybody get one. Maybe some could but not all. If everyone had a cochlear implants it wouldn’t be any deaf people in the world.”

Eastview Mall Trip

On March 23, 2013, nine DRIVE students took advantage of Keuka College transportation to the Eastview Mall. Two peer mentors and a DRIVE staff member accompanied the students. Students had lunch and shopped for items that they needed. After lunch, some students took a ride on the carousel in the food court. Some students stopped at Brookstone where they were amazed by a Brookstone employee flying a toy drone. Other students went to the Lego Store to window shop where there were Lego kits ranging from $10-over $400. A few students, threw coins in the foutain and made a wish. Overall, it was a fun time for all.

Erica at Work

Reading and Writing

This is a time in the morning for students to sit back relax and enjoy a book of their own or write what has been on their mind. Many of the students are writing a book of their own. We are available to assist where needed but often with the supports already in place through the iPad’s accessibility and natural supports from peers we are not needed. Everyone seems to enjoy this class as a stress relieving opportunity to read and write!
